Autumn on Bowen

The weather has turned to Autumn, with mist and rain and darkness. It's time to get out the raingear and waterproof footwear! The deciduous trees are changing to shades of yellow and gold. The giant Douglas maple leaves are coming down and blowing around. A few days ago I watched from my bedroom window as some leaves blew off the nearby trees and fell UP! (We live on a steep hill with lots of updrafts.) It certainly was a unique sight to see. It was as if Newton's law had been temporarily suspended. Of course, they eventually came down, to lie wet and shining on the streets and paths, making for slippery footing.
It has been a challenge to walk Nemo, our very energetic young German shepherd, in the dark, wet weather. This week, on a whim, I bought him a glow-in-the-dark ball! So, now I take him out in the dark, with a red strobe light on his collar so I can see him, and send him chasing after the ball on the dark field! (For those of you who don't live here, Bowen has only a minimum of street lights, so when it gets dark it's REALLY dark.) I'm glad to report that Nemo is settling much better into Island life and no longer attacking every dog he encounters. That's a relief!
Bruce is still away on his dream Outdoor Leadership course on Vancouver Island. He is having a great time. He is due to come home in under 3 weeks. It's been a struggle to get by without him and we will be glad to have him home.

After more than a week of glorious, sunny weather, The Fog has rolled in! Suddenly it feels cold and clammy and dark and gloomy! Just in time for Hallowe'en.
